Enjoying and savoring a meal is something we can do with all five senses. The psychological and physical satisfaction of eating a well-balanced meal does more than nourish our bodies. It nourishes and warms our souls, connects us to one another, and it affirms the deep appreciation we should have for a basic need in life.
Not too long ago I was reminiscing about a restaurant I used to work in. It had the most delicious Caesar salad. I started to think about it and the image developed into a story of adventures taken by my senses. It can happen for you too. Make your meals memorable and indulge your senses with food. The crisp chopped Romaine lettuce were complimented by tender red slices of tomato cast in a sea of emerald green roughage. The peppercorns and caesar dressing delicately coated the raw pieces and jagged edges, but never to the point of saturation. Slightly moist and crunchy seasoned croutons accompanied shredded parmesan reggiano atop the salad. Anchovies lay gingerly amongst the robust ensemble. Perched on the edge of the plate, was a thick lemon wedge that evoked a spritely burst of color while adding an instant hint of citrus aroma. It was a gastronomic masterpiece begging to be consumed with passion and abandon.
Will you make this for lunch or dinner? I hope you do and make it your own! Besides the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in the greens, tomatoes, and lemon, the protein in the anchovies will attend to the satiation of the meal. The fats from the oil (from the dressing, homemade if possible, or reduced-fat store bought, and anchovies) will also provide satiety and help the body absorb the nutrients.
Where will your senses take you today?
